I've always been captivated by the intersection of technology and user needs. My five-year journey as a product manager has been guided by this fascination, as I continuously strive to uncover new opportunities and build solutions that serve both our business goals and our users. Today, I'd like to share with you a recent assignment I did related to Spotify - enhancing the user experience to increase the conversion of free users to premium subscribers.
Our starting point was identifying the problem. In our case, user feedback and data analysis revealed a key barrier for free users upgrading to a premium subscription: they couldn't purchase a subscription directly within the mobile app. Instead, they were forced to use a web browser, creating an inconvenient disruption in their journey.
Our hypothesis was straightforward. By enabling in-app subscription purchases, we believed we could simplify the process and decrease the barriers to subscription. The ultimate validation of our success would be a reduction in drop-offs during the subscription process and an increase in premium subscriptions made through the mobile app.
Success metrics were crucial in helping us measure progress towards our objectives. We decided to track the drop-off rate during the subscription process, aiming for a reduction of at least 10% within the first three months post-implementation. Also, we targeted an increase in premium subscriptions purchased through the mobile app and the overall conversion rate from free users to premium subscribers.
Before diving into the solution, we crafted user stories to guide our design and development efforts. As a firm believer in user-centric design, I've always found user stories an invaluable tool to empathize with our users and understand their needs better. Here are a few we created:
As a free Spotify user using the mobile app, I want to purchase a premium subscription directly within the app, So that I can upgrade to premium without having to switch to a browser.
As a Spotify premium user, I want to manage my subscription directly within the app, So that I have full control over my premium subscription and can manage it easily.
Of course, the path was not without its challenges. Several open questions needed answering. How could we integrate the subscription process into the mobile app without disrupting the existing user experience? What security measures did we need to ensure for in-app purchases? How would we communicate the new in-app subscription option to our free users? These and more guided our research, design exploration, security planning, and communication strategies.
Reflecting on this project, I'm reminded of why I love being a product manager. We identified a pain point, constructed a hypothesis to address it, and are now well on our way to providing a solution that improves the experience for our users. It's a rewarding journey that underscores the power of empathetic product management.
Stay tuned for more stories from my journey in product management, where we continue to put users at the heart of our product decisions.
